Quaker parrot won’t come out of cage?

I just got my parrot in December of 2008 and we have just started trying to take him out. We have tried just opeing the door and walking away, but he just sits there and stands at the door. Is there anything we can do to make him feel more comfortable with us and have him come out of his cage?

Thanks, Kayla
I have tried putting food outside of the cage and it didn’t work. I bought him at Petco, so I don’t know if he was handfed, he is not my first bird, but he is my first parrot, and he is 8 months old.

Try to hand feed it or put food that he loves outside of the cage to tempt him out.

It depends. Were they hand fed, how old are they, and is this your first bird?
You’re going to just have to get past your fear and try to get them out. Talk in a soft voice, move your hand in slow, try to calm him down, and if he bites you, he bites you. Birds are protective of their territory, and he’s most likely scared of you.
Also, make a playpen on top of his cage out of a few branches, and put a bit of apple or banana on the perch. Also make sure he’s in a public area where he sees you every day, just not a kitchen–food fumes can be harmful to the bird. If you’re in the living room a lot, put him there.
Hope this helps!

This is one of the reason i tell people to take there Quakers out of the cage right after you get them. You should be taking him out one hour everyday playing with him showing him a lot of love. You will find that after you start taking him out he will start coming out on his own.Leave his cage door open as much as you can.I have a Quaker of my own,And last year i had to get three ready to be adopted.GOOD LUCK

I have the same problem with my bird. When we really want to get him out, we take a peanut, (you take whatever he likes a lot) and we slowly lead him out. I know it isn’t a good thing, but parrots do have favorites. Have you tried with everyone in the family?
If he continues, force him out (pull him out). I now that sounds mean, but trust me. After he is out, take him to a nice quiet, well lite room, with just you and the bird. nobody else. Sit him down on the floor. Mabey play with him. Feed him lots and lots of nuts and seeds. Don’t worry about the crumbs on your carpet. Vacum later. Making sure your bird is happy around you is more important.
It could also be that you got him/her recently. My bird wasn’t comfortale with us for the first couple months. Does he usually come out? Just keep following the above method. He will come eventually.
Just slowly move your hand out towards him. He will most likely bite. That is okay. Come on. He can’t do any more that take out a tiny bit of blood at the most. Even if it hurts, don’t show it. Pretend it doesn’t matter to you. He wan’t you to be hurt and back away. Don’t do that. Don’t be afraid to make him come out.
